Far from equilibrium QCD dynamics in high energy nuclear collisions (PRETALK for students at 15:30 h)

High-energy nuclear collisions produce a nonequilibrium plasma of quarks and gluons which thermalizes and exhibits hydrodynamic flow. A general theory of the equilibration process has been outlined previously, but until recently there were no practical frameworks to smoothly connect the early gluon production in classical field simulations with late-time hydrodynamic expansion. In this talk I will review our recent results of far from equilibrium QCD dynamics in the leading order QCD kinetic theory. At high gluon occupancies particle distributions exhibit a self-similar evolution with time dependent scaling exponents, which extends the scaling phenomena observed in classical-statistical simulations. At smaller occupancies, and later times, quarks and gluons reach chemical equilibrium. We therefore estimate the minimum particle multiplicity needed for this to happen in proton-proton and proton-nucleus collisions.
