Why many-body physics is needed to determine the neutrino mass from nuclear decay (PRETALK for students at 15:30 h)

When Fermi introduced the neutrino to explain beta decay [1] he not only introduced the neutrino but also presented a method for the determination of its mass. Currently experiments of this kind are performed in Heidelberg within the ECHO collaboration. 163Ho ions decay via electron capture to 163Dy. The energy difference between 163Ho and 163Dy (around 2.8 keV) is divided between electronic excitations and the energy of an escaping neutrino. The determination of the electron neutrino mass by electron capture in 163Ho relies on a precise understanding of the deexcitation of a core hole after an electron-capture event. Why one needs advanced many-body theory with strong interactions that can not be treated perturbatively for this problem and how we solve such a problem for 67 strongly interacting electrons will be discussed during this presentation.
